Linda Miller Supports Tax Cut for All Iowa Property Taxpayers
(DES MOINES) – Today Rep. Linda Miller (R-Bettendorf) supported a plan to cut property taxes for all classes of property in Iowa.
The House took up House File 697, the omnibus bill, which included a plan to lower property taxes on employers by rolling back their tax burden to 75 percent of assessed value. Other tax cut areas would include new construction which gets a 25 percent tax break immediately. Existing businesses also see a cut, getting a five percent cut per year for five years. Finally, the Republican plan protects homeowners with a property tax cap and by increasing the state portion of the school aid formula – removing school aid from the backs of homeowners.
City property taxes in Iowa have risen 74 percent over the last ten years, county property taxes have risen over 64 percent over the same amount of time.
“Iowa taxpayers can no longer afford to carry the heavy burden of ever-rising property taxes,” said NAME. “With over 100,000 Iowans out of work, now is not the time to be timid. We need to give businesses of all sizes the impetus to hire without punishing residential taxpayers.”
